What Is Kojic Acid and Why Does It Work?
Kojic acid is a naturally derived compound — a byproduct of sake fermentation — that inhibits the enzyme responsible for melanin production. In plain terms: it stops dark spots, post-acne marks and uneven pigmentation from forming, while gently resurfacing the top layer of skin so new, clearer cells emerge faster.
ShopDrop carries three kojic acid products, each with a different application and intensity. Knowing which one to use — and when — is everything.
The ShopDrop Kojic Acid Range
- Kojic Acid Exfoliator (£22.99) — a face wash formula that combines physical and chemical exfoliation. Use as your second cleanse in a PM routine, 2–3 nights per week maximum.
- Dark Spot Cream Kojic Acid (£24.99) — a targeted moisturiser applied all over after cleansing, for general brightening and evening of skin tone.
- Targeted Dark Spot Care 1% Kojic Acid (£22.99) — the precision product; used as a spot treatment directly on individual marks, post-acne scarring or areas of hyperpigmentation.
Step-by-Step: Evening Exfoliator Routine
Step 1 — Pre-cleanse
Remove makeup or SPF first with an oil-based balm or micellar water. This ensures the Kojic Acid Exfoliator is working on skin, not sitting on top of a layer of product residue.
Step 2 — Apply the Kojic Acid Exfoliator
Take a small amount — a 10p-sized squeeze is enough for the full face. Work into slightly damp skin using gentle circular motions for 60 seconds. Don't scrub. The exfoliating particles do the work; pressure just causes irritation.
Step 3 — Rinse thoroughly
Rinse with cool or lukewarm water — never hot — and pat dry. Your skin should feel smooth, slightly tingly, never burning. If it burns, rinse immediately and reduce frequency to once a week.
Step 4 — Apply your serum
On exfoliation nights, your skin is freshly resurfaced and highly receptive. Apply Exosome & Niacinamide Serum (£23.99) now — the niacinamide works in direct partnership with kojic acid to brighten and tighten pores.
Step 5 — Spot treat
Apply Targeted Dark Spot Care 1% Kojic Acid (£22.99) directly onto any dark spots, post-acne marks or patches of discolouration. Use a clean fingertip or a precision applicator. Let it absorb fully before the next step.
Step 6 — Moisturise
Finish with Dark Spot Cream Kojic Acid (£24.99) all over, or your regular night cream if you've already used the spot treatment above. This locks in all the actives and prevents any transepidermal water loss overnight.
When NOT to Use It
- Don't use exfoliating acids on broken or irritated skin — hold off if you have a flare-up, a fresh spot or any visible redness.
- Don't combine with retinol on the same night — both are resurfacing actives; used together they will over-exfoliate and compromise your skin barrier.
- Don't use the exfoliator more than 3 times a week — more is not faster, it's damaging. Your skin needs time between sessions to regenerate.
- Always use SPF in the morning after any acid treatment — freshly resurfaced skin is more sun-sensitive. No SPF means you're undoing the brightening work you did the night before.
How Long Until You See Results?
With consistent use 2–3 times a week alongside the ShopDrop spot care products, most people see a visible reduction in dark spots within 6–8 weeks. Stubborn hyperpigmentation may take up to 12 weeks — patience is the active ingredient here.
